We wanted to
elaborate a bit on
how we finish off
our wood jumps.
While the majority
of the wood used in
the building of our
jumps is exterior
grade lumber, i.e.
Pressure Treated or
Cedar, it is still
advised to further
protect that wood
from the elements.
We use a product by
Valspar, known as
Cabot.
In
particular,
we use the
Cabot Solid
Acrylic
Decking
Stains. We
find that
this stain
product
better
penetrates
the wood
over normal
exterior
grade
primers and
paints.
Something to
consider
with a horse
jump is the
nature of
the
environment
it lives in,
it's
outside,
it's in the
elements,
and more
then likely
it's going
to be hit at
some point
in it's life
time by a
horse. As we
all know
horses
aren't
small.
Traditional
paints tend
to chip away
and is more
of a surface
treatment
only.
Stain on the
other hand
penetrates
the wood, so
the color
will more
then likely
remain, you
might just
have a dent
or ding at
the impact
location.
Stains go on
with many
less layers.
With lighter
colors, we
tend to coat
in 2-3
layers, with
stain. With
primer and
paint, with
a light
color and to
get an even,
solid coat,
we tend to
be upwards
of 5 coats.
The darker
colors, we
can do in
one coat
with stain.
As you will
see with the
colors
available in
the stain,
many are
much more
natural
toned. We
have worked
with a local
store and
they are
able to get
bright
colors for
us.
As a general
note, prior
to painting
or staining,
it is wise
to properly
clean and
prep your
wood
surface.
Check the
directions
with your
chosen
product, for
proper prep.
With
pressure
treated
wood, the
wood needs
to dry, for
at least 30
days,
outside.
Longer is
usually
advised for
best
treatment,
again check
with your
product's
directions.
Cedar does
not require
drying and
can be
treated when
you are
ready.
For our
jumps, we
offer the
Cabot Solid
Stain. We
can finish
your jump
with a solid
color,
stripes,
polka dots,
whatever you
would like.
We also do
stone and
brick
treatments,
all using
the Cabot
Stain.
